I’ve been reading online movie critic Jeffrey Wells for ages. So it’s a real kick to have a guest column at his brand-new “Visitors” section over at Hollywood-Elsewhere.com. Take a look and see why I’m in support of ugly actors.

Terrific article! I couldn’t agree with you more!!!
I have been saying this for years myself. It’s really apparent in books - like The Shipping News - where it is a major plot point that the main character is hideously ugly, and then in the movie they cast the non-hideous Kevin Spacey. It weakens the plots of so many movies.
I hate to admit this, but your article on entertainment personalities was too deep for me.
… picking on Julia is the cinematic equivalent of splitting hairs. I wouldn’t expect to see her taking my picture at the DMV.
What does that mean?
Yes. Exactly. The other day on some behind-the-scenes movie show a small-time Canadian producer was saying, ‘and I’m tired of Canadian movies using ugly people all the time. American movies are so, y’know, cosmetic. I’ll never use an ugly person in one of my films unless it’s supposed to be a joke.’ And this guy is a jowly, pig-eyed, snaggled-toothed goof. And now I hate him and love you.
congrats!
I will preface this with I AM a theatre geek...but I was SO OUTRAGED when stinkin’ Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino were cast in Frankie and Johnny. The story made NO sense with those two in those roles. Yet another reason why I don’t actually love the film business.
i admit i didn’t get the splitting hairs comment either, but i did like the paleontologist reference.
excellent article, mon ami ...
I started to explain the DMV comment, but I find I can’t muster the energy. So let’s just call it sloppy writing on my part.
