Let’s settle the Irish/Guinness thing once and for all. It doesn’t taste all that different. It’s still Guinness. But the texture is different, because no Irish pub will take less than five minutes to pour it.
That’s a huge difference from American bars, which treat beer like fast food: slop it out fast and sling it down the bar. There’s places that respect the power of the slow pour, but too many of them are just trying to turn tables and scarf up tips. In Ireland, you can be assured of a very slow, rich pour.
Basically, the difference is the same as between regular TV and HD-TV:

It’s still a frog. You can tell it’s a frog. There’s nothing wrong with the frog. But all things being equal, you’d rather see the HD frog.
Trip pictures, such as they are, reside here.
I could have done without seeing the frog actually. Frogs are icky. Pass it on.
I think the example could have been just as well made if you’d used a much nicer subject. Like Salma Hayek perhaps? Salma, I’m willing to bet, is good poured slow or fast.
And no, I don’t know what I mean by that. Well, not much anyway.
Also, sorry. :D
Great trip pics, except for the sausage breakfast which looks so bad in low D that I’d hate to see it in High D. Is there a link to Maggie’s pics?
Yes, I see, the frog in HD is MUCH bigger.
Nice photos, I liked all the Frary pics.
I watched a Football game in Hi Def this weekend.
I decided that, much like Low Def, I would still much rather be at the game in person, even if the players are only ants on the field.
Is the difference also basically the same as between your pictures and Maggie’s superior pictures?
Just kidding - I loved all the pictures! Beautiful!!
Jaysus,ye’d be after needing a dacent pint after all the sodden grayness of yer so-called Emerald Isles. Sure, ye must be delighted to be back in Califor-nih-ay!
Hi left you a comment on your Flickr pics, it wasn’t a soccer match it was a football match - Gaelic football, I think my comment seems abrupt now that U read it back so I’m leaving a note here to say I didn’t mean that, just I’m from Mayo was we lost so I’m eating sour grapes!
Found your blog from linkateria, great post about Guinness and true too, hate the stuff myself but appreciate the art of a good pint pouring.
Interesting analogy. Now I’ll be trying not to think of frogs when i have my Guinness.

I’ve never been to the Source in Ireland. But I must say that the Guinness I had in London was disappointing.
Can you please give me your top 3 or 5 things to see or do (other than drink beer, I so have that one covered) in Ireland? We are going in May and I need ideas from people who have been there.
Drink Jameson’s?
Other than that, I really dug the King James Castle in Limerick, the skeletons buried in the crypt under St. Michan’s in Dublin, and the ruins of the Francisan Friary near Desmond Castle in Adair. But I’m sort of a castle/old ruins kind of guy. There’s plenty of other popular stuff that I didn’t do, like visit the Cliffs of Moher or go the feast at Bunratty’s Castle. And I’ve heard that Skellig Michael is life-changing--it’s an island off the southern coast where you can see much wildlife and nature type stuff. If I’d go back I’d definitely do that.
thanks! adding it all to the list...esp. the Jameson’s!
