This is a classy weblog, and definitely isn’t the type of site that shares theories about popular television shows. Except not really. I want to talk about what I think is going on in regards to Lost. Since some of you may not have seen last week’s episode or plan to catch up with the series via DVD or Ipod or whatever, I’ve put the post in inviso-text--you have to swipe it with your cursor in order to read it. And if you don’t want to read it, get lost. HA. See how that worked?
My theory is that the island is a way for its inhabitants to reach a kind of spiritual fulfillment, at which point they die and go off to their final reward (or back to reality?). Let’s look at the major island deaths that have occurred: Boone died once he realized that he could be a fully realized individual without his stepsister to complete him. Shannon died the moment she had finally been given love and acceptance from someone who understood her completely. It seems clear to me that the island is a series of obstacles that force people to examine who they really are, and then offs them once they reach a point of contentment and understanding.
Now, we’ve had people die who don’t seem to have undergone any personal epiphany, such as the guy who was sucked into the plane propeller in the first episode. But maybe the system has broken down because no one’s maintaining it. We know that a billionaire philanthropist named Hanso has something to do with the island, and Hanso was also involved in the search for extraterrestrial life--so let’s say Hanso created the island with alien technology in order to help people reach a higher state of being. But Hanso died and now it’s just a system running wild and occasionally flying off the rails.
So, to summarize my theory:
If George W. Bush landed on the island, he’d find weapons of mass destruction and then he’d die.
If Amelia Earhart landed on the island, she’d be super happy that she survived her plane flight and she’d feel great and fulfilled and then she’d die.
If Janeane Garofalo landed on the island, everyone would vote democrat while listening to monotone, generic indie music and then she’d die.
If I landed on the island, I’d grow a full head of hair and play strip Scrabble with Evangeline Lilly and then I’d die.
All clear? Good. And it’ll only take about four seasons of glacier-paced storytelling to prove me right.

Ooh! This sounds fun! I want to try. Er, except I’ve never seen Lost, so I might get the concept wrong:
If Ricardo Montalban landed on the Island he would give birth to Herve Villechaize, and then HE would die, but not before giving his soul to Herve (who has no soul as predicted by Revelations) while Demi Moore shouted in the background, ‘Would you die for him?!’, thereby saving humanity and ensuring a second season.
Yeah, see, I thought that once the people found someone who believed in them, then they died. The teacher with the TNT had people believe him. Boone had people him. Blah Blah Blah. I’m just hoping King Kong makes a cameo to promote his movie this week.
I’ve got one more episode to watch on the DVDs of first season. The urge to highlight your obscured text is SO freaking high. I can’t come here for a few days. Thanks for hiding it.
The other day I brought up a webpage that had a picture front and center of a recent character who had just been killed off but who is very much alive in episodes I’m watching. I gots me the rage from that.
Man, I hope Michelle Rodriguez finds what she’s looking for really soon.
The kids, especially Walt, are too important to be ignored in any theory though. And wouldn’t you say Walt has been fulfilled? He certainly has found a father and realized how loved he is. So why isn’t he dead? By that same reasoning, why isn’t Locke dead?
Way too many questions. I’ve decided to just watch it with a large bowl of popcorn and let them hit me with unexpected-ness ... my head spins when I try and make reason of anything. Which I am absolutely positive is my first problem ... the trying to make reason.
You have a point about the kids, but Locke is anything but fulfilled. He and Jack are on a trajectory to meet somewhere in the middle of their respective belief systems--faith versus reason.
And like I said, I think the system has gone off the rails and has been left unattended, so that could explain the literal kidnappings and other monstrous elements.
wow this really IS a classy weblog.
Uh, stop trash talking The Janeaneor I’ll stick your
out your nose.
(the rest is in REAL inviso-text)
Hurley be saved!
I’ve missed the inviso-text. Every entry should include some inviso-text I say.
I think the writers are hoping that you’ll love everyone so much by the time they reveal the whole deal you wont realize all the pieces dont fit.
I don’t watch that show, but I do read your (um...classy) weblog and I now know that if I lived on that island, I’d probably die due to fulfillment once I learned the wonders of how to code inviso-text from Greg.
I wonder what the federal marshall’s fulfillment was - he never got to bring that bitch to justice, but maybe his goal was just to retire to some warm desert isle - mission accomplished, so croak away! Also, that copilot who was smashed by a monster up in the tree - I suspect he just wanted to fly, and fly, and never land.
Also, I think Hanso is just a contraction of Han Solo, and pretty soon we’ll have tie-fighters and wookies overrunning the damn place. Wouldn’t be any weirder than what they’ve got already.
i want to know how you *DO* the inviso-text. that is beyond my current blogging capabilities. hélas.
i don’t watch this show. should i?
Lost is mindless entertainment in its purest form, but that’s just my opinion.
You do the inviso text by typing (font color="white")--using brackets instead of parentheses--and then (font color="black") when you’re done. In Explorer, choose “View” and then “Source” to see the raw code.
Oooh, good theory. Maybe Jin and Sun will finally realize they love and forgive each other and then will get eaten by the polar bear?
do you know that this website is probably now watched by some unnamed government watch group because you’ve used the words “bush” and “die” in the same sentence?
too much mulder for you? yeah...maybe.
SPOILER!
I really like the Boone/Shannon theory. So what do you make of Goodwin saying they only took the good ones?
I started getting into LOST this season...and it was love at first bite.
Wow, I LOVE this theory. Wraps a lot together.
I don’t watch Lost but I am fascinated by your invisio-text.
Redemption? Bah! It’s Santa Claus Island!
I ran away from your web log as soon as I saw the word “Lost.” I didn’t want you to ruin it for me, but I’m caught up now and can see that you’ve got my back, you and your invisotext. That’s a good theory. The guy who gets sucked into the jet engine doesn’t prove anything. He may have been in a really good place emotionally right before he got sucked up. But what about that guy from Ed? Did spending four days in a pit being tortured give him the peace of mind required for Goodwin to snap his neck? But I’m open to it. My theory is that Ricardo Montalbon is going to show up with a “little person” in the last episode and send them home on that little prop plane with free passes for a return trip.
